Two In-Person Opportunities

If you’re in or near Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, November 9, 2011, consider dropping in (ok, struggling through security and THEN dropping in) on a Congressional  LGBT Equality ‘Equal Time’ Briefing: Improving the Lives of LGBT Seniors.  It will be held between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. in 2168 Rayburn House Office Building (Gold Room).  The briefing will feature Michael Adams, Executive Director of SAGE; Karen I. Fredriksen-Goldsen, who will soon release the national LGBT aging study, Caring and Aging with Pride; Kathy Greenlee, Assistant Secretary for Aging in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; and Jeff Krehely, Director of the LGBT Research and Communications Project, Center for American Progress.  The briefing is sponsored by Members of Congress Tammy Baldwin, David Cicilline, Barney Frank, and Jared Polis.

If you’re closer to Toronto, try to clear your schedule on November 28-29, 2011, when the SeniorPrideNetwork at the 519 Church Street Community Center hosts “Opening the Closet on Aging: The 50+ LGBTQ Empowerment Conference.”  Publicity notes that the conference will feature “local LGBTQ activists and experts from the fields of Health Care, Mental Health and Addictions, Sexual Health, Journalism, HIV & AIDS, Legal Rights, Long Term Care, Bereavement and Supportive Housing.”  Keynoters are Rinaldo Walcott, Associate Professor and Chair, Department of Sociology and Equity Studies, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto; and Camille Orridge, Chief Executive Officer of the Toronto Central Local Health Integration Network.  Registration is $150 for agencies and the general public; $50 for older LGBT people; and $75 for students.  To register contact Heather Bain at 416-392-6874 or 416-355-6787 or HBain [at] The519 [dot] org.
